This website explains how doctors in training can join a GP training programme and describes the benefits of training in Tameside and Glossop
If you are looking to make an application for a GP Training scheme, this must be done on line vis the national GP recruitment website. http://www.gprecruitment.org.uk/ There is no longer a local or regional system for joining GP training. However the Northwest deanery is in charge of its own appointment process. This involves three parts: 1.an on line application, 2. an MCQ exam to test knowledge and, if passed, 3. a series of assessed simulated surgeries and a written judgement exercise.
For information about opportunities in the Northwest, read our website, or those of other areas in and around Manchester at https://www.nwpgmd.nhs.uk/content/gp-recruitment There is a particularly good account on this website of the areas in the North West where GP training is offered, and feedback from previous trainees.
The training period for general practice is an important time for learning skills you will require throughout your career. All GPVTS rotations are similarly organised nationally. Trainees spend the first eighteen months on an arranged scheme in a hospital and then a further 18 months attached to a general Practice. A new committee called PMETB (Post Graduate Medical Education and Training Board) is now in charge of accreditting all training schemes and making sure every post is up to scratch.
The Tameside and Glossop vocational training scheme will have an intake of 16 New Doctors in August 2011. We run our own ST3 day release course and ST1-2 study days, rather than join up with other local training schemes. We are told, year on year, by our trainees that we give excellent supervision and training. They particualrly like the way we have managed to rotate trainees through 5 specialties in the first two years, rather than the standard four. We belive this gives excellent bredth of clinical experience.
The first year involves 3 four month rotations in the following specialities
Psychiatry
Paediatrics
Medicine
Obstetrics and Gynaecology
Accident and Emegency
Ear Nose and Throat
Rheumatology/Dermatology
Orthopaedica and geriatrics
Medical Assessment Unit
Year 2 will involve 6 months in a further hospital post and 6 months in General Practices.
There are currently 32 GPVTS doctors working in the hospital. A significant amount of recent attention has been given to ensure these posts give the best education for a career in General Practice. There are opportunities in all posts to do more than just the day to day work of a hospital SHO. Each post is described in more detail in the following pages.
We are able to offer placements for those requiring Less Tan Full Time Training.
Each practice, in much the same way as the hospital posts, has recently gained its accreditation. Tameside has some of the youngest GP Trainers in the Northwest. The training practices also host Foundation Course year 2 doctors. We have our own day release course for GP registrars, consisting of 15 days of protected teaching time a year.
Our GPVTS is new and managed by enthusiastic GPs and Consultants. We can guarantee you a fulfilling and thought provoking GP training experience in Tameside.
